This day last year, the comedy world was blessed with AMAZING photographs of nearly every major popular comedian in America. This was HUGE news and a complete surprise to the fandom!
The gathering was due to the creation of the first big in-person comedy festival since the pandemic started, an idea to help the United States compete against international events like Just for Laughs in Montreal and Fringe in Edinburgh.
As the streaming service had subsumed Comedy Central as the place to make comics household names, Netflix decided to celebrate their status by having the Netflix Is a Joke Festival in spring of 2022.
Tons of stand-up comics gathered together last year on May 1st for a Sunday brunch in honor of Ted Sarandos, the CEO of Netflix. Ted's Brunch, as it was called, featured a who's who of the comedy world.
Here's my breakdown of who attended the event!
Let's start with the ENORMOUS group photo.
Starting from left to right, these are the people I can identify (please let me know if I've missed anyone!):
Cedric the Entertainer
Tom Papa
Keegan-Michael Key
Lil Rel Howery
Ali Wong
Tiffany Haddish
Jerry Seinfeld
Molly Shannon
Fortune Feimster
Riki Lindhome
Sasheer Zamata
John Mulaney
Tig Notaro
Fred Armisen
Dave Chappelle
Nick Kroll
Neal Brennan
Jerrod Carmichael
Bo Burnham
Mo Amer
Aziz Ansari
Bill Burr
Craig Robinson
Jeffrey Ross
Jimmy Carr
Bob Odenkirk
Wow, what a talented group of performers! Also in attendance (but not pictured) were Adam Sandler, Norman Lear, Jimmy O. Yang, Iliza Shlesinger, and Ken Jeong to name a few.
Having John and Bo standing so close to each other blew my mind last year. Two of my favorites at the same event! 🤯
There were also some smaller couple or group shots.
Here's Bo with his good friend Nick Kroll (love the floral shirt...he looked AMAZING).
Bo posed with his best bud Jerrod Carmichael too (and with some weird statue street performers).
John Mulaney, Ali Wong, Nick Kroll, and Neal Brennan also posed with the performers.
And there was a separate shot of Ali adorably leaning on John.
And Jerrod posed in his impeccably tailored canary yellow suit with Tig and Jimmy.
Finally, there's a photo of Bill Burr chatting with Sebastian Maniscalco and Seinfeld that has an Easter egg: Bo's head and Lorene's dress!
Do you see them?
If not, let's zoom in...
And you can tell it's Lorene because she was wearing that same dress for the 1975 photo with Phoebe—boy, can things change in a year!
Luckily for us comedy aficionados, Netflix has announced the festival will be back in May 2024.
Fingers crossed we get more amazing pictures of comics—and maybe Bo if he's feeling up to it!
May 2024 UPDATE: We did get an epic pool pic, and Bo is partially hiding behind a pillar (very on brand for him!).
